FAQs

FAQs for your Portland Coffee Tour

What is Third Wave Coffee?
See our description here.

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?
Yes. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased using Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Cash is not accepted.

What do I recieve for the price of my ticket?
Your ticket gets you 3 hours of coffee tastings, entertainment and education with stops at 5-7 top coffee roasters. Several of the tours culminate with a "cupping" - the international standard for coffee tasting, and all tours feature a demonstration of a variety of brew methods, as well as some of the best espresso available anywhere. We also provide a couple small bites of food to help with over-caffeination on the tour.

How much coffee will I be drinking on this tour?
We will be drinking approximately two full servings of coffee - which would be equivalent to about 2 double espressos or 16 ounces of brewed coffee. We try to spread it out and order single espressos where possible and provide 2-3 ounces of brewed coffee, when sampling. When participating in a cupping you always have the option to spit, much like when wine tasting. Walking will help to metabolize the caffeine, water will be available at each stop, and you will also be given something small to eat, such as half a bagel near the middle of the tour.

I only drink decaf. Is this tour for me?
We can accommodate people who drink only decaf to a certain degree. There will be places where you can sample decaf espresso, or have a decaf brewed coffee, however, when it comes to comparison tastings, such as the cupping on this tour, these coffees will not be decaffeinated. If you are a decaf drinker, please "Enter a Message to the Seller" during your purchase to let us know and we will try our best to replace a few of the options with a decaf option. However, please keep in mind that some tastings will not have a decaf alternative.

Will food be served on this tour?
This is a coffee tasting tour, and we recommend that you not arrive overly hungry. We will provide something small to eat, such as half a bagel or a roll with cheese, purely to help with the caffeine consumption, but recommend that you not arrive hungry.

Does weather determine if tour takes place?
No - all tours take place rain or shine! Please dress appropriately for the weather - we will be inside for all of our tastings, but will be exposed to the elements while walking between cafes and roasteries.

What about taking children/adolescents on the tour?
Yes, children and adolescents aged 5 -16 can come on the tour for a reduced price. They will be provided with a hot chocolate at one of the stops and can have whatever the group is eating (generally half a bagel, or a roll with cheese, depending on the tour). Children 4 and under are free.

Is the tour stroller and/or wheelchair accessible?
Yes, there are ramps for most of the locations we will be visiting.

Can I purchase coffee beans on the tour?
Yes! If you love a coffee that you sample on this tour - we want you to have a chance to buy some to take home. However, please realize that the tour is on a schedule, with cafes and roasteries expecting us at certain times, so depending on the time, we may ask that you wait until after the tour is over to make your purchases.

Are tour guide gratuities included in the price?
Third Wave Coffee Tours does not include gratuities in the cost of our tickets, as they are considered discretionary. A standard gratuity for a tour guide in Portland, Oregon is 15% to 20% of the tour price. If you've had a great experience, gratuities are graciously accepted by the tour guide for a job well done.

Is this tour appropriate for Portlanders?
Yes! It's been our pleasure to introduce many locals to new cafes that are now their favorites. We've also enjoyed watching people discover new and better ways to make their cup of joe in the morning based on what they've learned on our tours! It's music to our ears to hear someone exclaim "that's the best cup of coffee I've ever had!" It's an honor to be part of that journey!
